(1) to counter the threat from the attack of Moghul Emperor Aurangazeb from the North

(2) to create a powerful base in the South from where he could resist the blows of the Moghuls

(3) he also wanted to meet his step-brother Vyankoji Raje of Tanjavur to resolve the dispute between them with respect to ancestral Jagir and persuade him to help him in the work of Swaraj.
