(A) Answer in short.

1. Why should we store water?

Ans. We should store the rain water because :
i) When it rains some rainwater flows away over the ground and some water seeps into the ground.
ii) Also all the water we get comes from the rain.
iii) The rainy season lasts for three or four months and along with us, all living things use this water all year round.
iv) If we do not store water, we will not have enough water for our needs.

2. What were the traditional ways of storing water in the house?

Ans. In the past, draw-wells were dug to store get drinking water. They were small wells from which water was drawn using a small pot (pohra) tied to a rope.

3. What is a dam built on?

Ans. A dam is a structure built across a river or stream.

4. What must we keep in mind while using water?

Ans. While using water we should always remember that :
i) Also all the water we get comes from the rain.
ii) The rainy season lasts for three or four months and along with us, all living things use this water all year round.
iii) If we do not store water, we will not have enough water for our needs.

5. What is water pollution?

Ans. Water pollution is the contamination, or the fall in the quality of water usually due to human activity. The waste water from various industries get mixed in river causing water pollution.

(B) How can water be saved in places with water shortage? Suggest what can be done.

Ans. In places with water shortage, water can be saved by storing water in tanks, buckets, pots and utensils and then using it carefully. Also wells and reservoirs can be dug and rain water can be collected for later use.

(C) What good habits must we cultivate in order to use water economically?

Ans. The following good habits can be cultivated to use water economically:
i) to reduce wastage of water
ii) manage use of minimum water for any use
iii) maintaining the water pipes and taps in good condition.
