Words in a sentence are divided into different kinds or classes, called Parts of Speech, depending on their use or the work they perform in the sentence.

There are 8 Parts of Speech :

  1. Noun
  2. Pronoun
  3. Adjective
  4. Verb
  5. Adverb
  6. Preposition
  7. Conjunction
  8. Interjection

1. Noun:  A noun is a word used as the name of a person, place, animal or thing.

  • Shivaji was a great King.
  • Mumbai is the capital of Maharashtra.
  • The Sun rises in the east.
  • His honesty won him appreciation.

2. Pronoun : A pronoun is a word that is used instead of a noun.

  • Jiya is happy, because she won the race.
  • The pen is on the table, you left it there.
  • Lucy is eating as she is hungry.
  • John and Suzy went to market, they will be back by evening.

3. Adjective : An adjective is a word that is used to add something to the meaning of noun.

  • Lucy was a beautiful bride.
  • Sindbad was a brave sailor.
  • Suzy is very particular about her studies.
  • There are forty students in my class.

4. Verb : A verb is a word used in a sentence  to express an action or state or somethng or somebody.

  • Usain Bolt run fastest in Olympics sprints.
  • Mumbai is a busy city.
  • Books are our best friends.
  • John cooks dinner every Sunday.

5. Adverb : An adverb is a word that is used in a sentence to add something to the meaning of verb, an adjective or another adverb.

  • Sofia can make very beautiful sketches.
  • The fish quickly swam and disappeared.
  • We saw an ant hill outside the farm.
  • The baby elephant moved slowly to its mother.

6. Preposition : A preposition is a word in a sentence that shows a relationship
between a noun or pronoun and some other word in the sentence.

  • There is a horse in the stable.
  • Sofia is fond of music.
  • Many mangoes laid under the tree.
  • The boy next to Riya is the sports captain.

7. Conjunction : A conjunction is a word used to join two words, phrases or sentences.

  • Yohan ran fast, but could not win.
  • Usain and Yohan are from Jamaica.
  • Lucy has been promoted twice, since she joined the company.
  • We had umbrellas, yet we were wet.

8. Interjection : An interjection is a word used in a sentence that expresses some sudden feeling.

  • Hurrah ! We won the game.
  • Ahh! that is a wonderful feeling.
  • Congrats ! Mike for your victory.
  • Alas ! He lost the battle.
