Ans. Hellen Keller overcame her handicaps with great courage, patience and struggle. Her clever and devoted teacher Miss Anne
Sullivan was also helpful in overcoming her handicaps.

(b) What part did Anne Sullivan play in Hellen’s life ?

Ans. (i) Miss Anne Sullivan came to teach Hellen when she nearly seven.
(ii) Miss Sullivan was a clever and devoted teacher and changed Hellen’s life.
(iii) Since Hellen could neither hear nor see, Miss Sullivan used the fingerspelling method to teach her.
(iv) Because of Miss Sullivan’s teaching, words began to have meaning for Hellen.
(v) Miss Sullivan described things to Hellen and told her what people are saying through conversations.

(a) What is meant by “Honour the white cane”

Ans. The white cane is used by blind people to walk their way. The term “Honour the white cane” means respecting and helping the blind and visually impaired people.

(b) Find out what Braille is :

Ans. Braille is a type of written language for the blind people. In the Braille system the characters are represented by patterns of
raised dots that can be felt by the fingertips. These are written with embossed paper.

(c) Find out the difference between fingerspelling method, sign language and Braille ?

Ans. The difference is as follows :
i. Fingerspelling method : It is a form of sign language that uses the finger to spell the words.
ii. Sign language : It is a method of communication that uses visual gestures and signs similar to those used by deaf people.
iii. Braille : It is a type of written language for the blind people. In the Braille system the characters are represented by patterns of
raised dots that can be felt by the fingertips.
